The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education was established as a statutory and autonomous body on January 1, 1966 under the Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act 1965.

MSBSHSE was formed to regulate certain matters of secondary education in Maharashtra. The act was amended in 1977. The most important work of the Maharashtra board is to conduct the SSC and HSC exams.
