ETS TOEFL is an English language test conducted by ETS - Educational Testing Service. The exam is an essential requirement taking up studies in the English speaking countries of the world. As many as 8,500 colleges across more than 130 countries accept and recognize TOEFL score. Primarily the exam is conducting in two formats:
  • Paper Based Test or PBT
  • Internet Based Test or iBT

Location of the preferred test center is an important consideration for deciding on the test format. Mostly TOEFL is conducted in the iBT format. Paper based test is conducted only in places where Internet is not available.

The main idea of conducting the test is to asses the English speaking, listening and comprehension abilities of the candidates who wish to go abroad for their UG & PG studies. Besides assessing the speaking, listening and comprehension abilities, there are two more section in the paper that test a candidates English reading and writing skills. The time allotted for taking the test is 4 hours 30 minutes. And the pattern of questions for each section, is as shared below.

TOEFL Test Score

TOEFL scores are available 10 days after the test is taken. Although the score is mailed to each candidates taking the test, but scores are also available online. iBT TOEFL test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points and any score above 90 is considered to be a good score. The TOEFL score is valid for two years. Colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent score.

TOEFL Test Format

Different sections of the test focus on different abilities. For example the listening comprehension section is for testing a candidate’s ability to understand American English. Similarly grammar & written test is to check the writing abilities and reading section for gauging any problem in the reading ability.

PBT TOEFL

Paper based format is conducted over the duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. The focus of the paper is on testing listening abilities and grammar, reading & writing skills. The test can be taken 6 times a year at test centers where TOEFL iBT is not available.

Step One: Locate your TOEFL test center

There are two formats for the TOEFL test – the TOEFL iBT test, administered via the Internet, and the TOEFL PBT test, administered in a paper-based format. To find out which format is available in your area, check your location before you register. As of May, 2008 the following locations offered testing in India:

Note that test centres are located either in the city listed, or within a 50 mile radius of that city. For example, the test centre in Gurgaon could be located either within the city limits of Gurgaon, or within a 50 mile radius of the city.
Along with the locations of testing centres, you will find out what kind of test is available to take. Most centres will offer the iBT, however those who cannot will offer the PBT. Once you have figured which test format you will be taking (iBT or PBT) you are ready for step two. You will also find what dates are currently available for testing as well as the cost of the test. Tests occur most frequently on Saturdays, and Sundays however if you practice a religion that observes the Sabbath, special arrangements can be made.
It is important to check your specific location as the cost of the TOEFL varies from country to country.

Step Two: Download the TOEFL 2015Bulletin

The TOEFL bulletin is an in depth guide to registering for the TOEFL. This guide is free and available from the TOEFL Website, specifically, here for the iBT Bulletin (PDF), and here for the PBT Bulletin (PDF). Make sure you get the guide that matches the test you will be taking. These booklets include the registration forms, information of fees and what identification you will need to bring with you, break down of additional fees (late registration fee, re-scoring fees, and additional score recipient’s requests).

Step Three: TOEFL Registration 2015

TOEFL iBT Format

There are 3 ways you can register for the TOEFL iBT format.

  • Register 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Be sure to spell your name exactly as it appears on the identification you will bring on test day.
  • Pay with a credit/debit card: American Express®, Discover®, JCB®, MasterCard® or VISA®. You can also use an electronic check (e-check) if you have a bank account in the United States or its territories.
  • Registration closes seven days before your test date.
  • Late registration closes three days before your test date (not including the day of the test) and has a late fee of US$35.
